Çeşme peninsula guide
Çeşme & Alaçatı Guide
This Çeşme & Alaçatı guide starts at the western tip of the İzmir peninsula, where the two resorts sit about 97 km and 88 km from the airport as the region’s favourite summer escape. There is no train to the peninsula: you get there on the İzmir–Çeşme motorway by HAVAŞ bus, private transfer, taxi or hire car.
Getting there from the airport
The drive takes about 1 hr 10 min to Alaçatı and 1 hr 15 min to Çeşme without traffic, via the tolled İzmir–Çeşme motorway. The HAVAŞ Alaçatı–Çeşme bus leaves from the arrivals exits and stops in Alaçatı and at Çeşme bus station. A private transfer to Çeşme or to Alaçatı takes you straight to your hotel, with a fixed price per vehicle, flight tracking and a driver waiting with a name sign.
On summer weekends traffic towards the peninsula builds on Friday evenings and back towards İzmir on Sunday afternoons, so allow extra time for your return flight.
Highlights
Alaçatı old town
Restored stone houses, bougainvillea-draped lanes, boutique hotels and some of the best restaurants on the coast.
Windsurfing and kitesurfing
Alaçatı’s steady winds have made it one of Türkiye’s best-known windsurfing spots; the bay is lined with surf schools.
Çeşme Castle and harbour
The Ottoman-era castle overlooks the harbour and marina in the town centre.
Ilıca
A long sandy beach with shallow water, known for its thermal springs — a favourite with families.
Coves and beaches
Clear, often cool water and a string of coves and beach clubs along the peninsula’s coast.
Urla on the way
Vineyards and restaurants, worth a stop on the drive from the airport.
When to go
July and August are the busiest months, when İzmir residents and visitors from Istanbul fill the peninsula, especially at weekends. June and September are warm with more space, and the sea stays pleasant into October — when Alaçatı often hosts its windsurf festival. Many seasonal restaurants and beach clubs close in winter.
