Where is İzmir airport?

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport lies in Gaziemir, on the southern edge of the city, about 18 km south-west of the centre according to Türkiye’s official aeronautical publication. It opened in 1987 and operates 24 hours a day. Its codes are ADB (IATA — the one on your ticket and luggage tag) and LTBJ (ICAO).

The terminals are run by TAV Ege, part of TAV Airports, under a concession that currently runs until the end of 2034; the airfield itself is the responsibility of DHMİ, Türkiye’s state airports authority. The official airport website is izmirairport.com. In 2025 the airport handled about 12.7 million passengers, which puts it among Türkiye’s busiest after the two Istanbul airports, Antalya and Ankara.

Two terminals: domestic and international

ADB has two separate terminal buildings. The International Terminal opened in 2006 and handles flights to and from abroad; the larger Domestic Terminal opened in 2014 and handles flights within Türkiye. Check your ticket before you set off and tell your driver which building you need — they are not the same door.

If you fly in from the UK or Europe on a direct flight, you land at the International Terminal and clear passport control there. If you connect in Istanbul, you usually clear passport control in Istanbul and land in İzmir as a domestic passenger. More on our terminal guide and the lounges and services page.

Heading to Kuşadası?

Kuşadası is the most popular destination for international visitors landing at ADB. It is about 80 km away — roughly 1 hr 15 min by road on the İzmir–Aydın motorway. The HAVAŞ Kuşadası bus leaves from the arrivals exits and stops in Selçuk on the way; a private transfer to Kuşadası takes you straight to your hotel or the cruise port; and metered taxis wait outside both terminals. There is no train to Kuşadası.

Not sure whether to fly into İzmir or Milas-Bodrum? Our İzmir or Bodrum airport comparison shows which is closer for Kuşadası, Ephesus, Didim and Bodrum.

Flying in from the UK, Ireland and Europe

İzmir has plenty of direct flights, many of them seasonal. SunExpress is by far the busiest airline at ADB, with routes to Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the UK (including London Stansted and Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester) as well as Dublin and Cork. Pegasus flies to Istanbul and several European cities, while Jet2 and easyJet add summer flights from the UK. Turkish Airlines connects through Istanbul Airport (IST).

Live times are on our İzmir airport flights board, and the airlines page lists who flies where.

Getting from the airport into İzmir and beyond

Unlike many holiday airports, ADB has a rail link — but which option suits you depends on where you are going and when you land.
