İZBAN suburban train

İzmir Airport Train (İZBAN): Is There a Metro at İzmir Airport?

The İzmir Airport train is the İZBAN suburban line: it stops at Adnan Menderes Havalimanı station, linked to the terminals by a footbridge and walkways, and reaches Alsancak in about 28 minutes. There is no metro at the airport: İZBAN is the rail link, running from early morning until just after midnight on the Aliağa–Selçuk line, with metro changes at Hilal and Halkapınar.

Airport signs say “Metro-İZBAN”, but there is no metro line at the airport. İZBAN connects with the İzmir Metro at Hilal and Halkapınar.

Is there a metro at İzmir airport?

No. Despite the “Metro-İZBAN” signs, no İzmir Metro line reaches the airport. A future metro line to the airport has been planned, but it has no opening date. Today you take İZBAN and change to the metro at Hilal or Halkapınar; Halkapınar also has the tram.

Where the trains go

The airport station lies on the 136 km Aliağa–Selçuk line, between Sarnıç and Cumaovası. Northbound trains serve central İzmir — including Alsancak, about 28 minutes away, and Hilal and Halkapınar for the metro — then continue around the bay to Karşıyaka and on towards Menemen and Aliağa. Note that Alsancak station has no metro.

Southbound trains run to Cumaovası, Torbalı and Tepeköy. For Selçuk and Ephesus there is no direct train from the airport: change at Tepeköy for the Selçuk service. With luggage, the transfer to Selçuk or the HAVAŞ Kuşadası bus is often easier.

Tickets and timetable

İZBAN gates take the İzmirim Kart (the city’s transport card, also valid on the metro, trams, ESHOT buses and ferries) and multi-ride tickets. You can buy and top up the card at the İZBAN ticket office at the airport and at some kiosks in the terminal. Fares depend on distance: at the end of your journey, tap the card on the “Artı Para” machine so the correct fare is charged.

Fares and the exact first and last trains change, so check the official İZBAN timetable before you travel — including the Tepeköy connection for Selçuk, and especially for an early flight or a late arrival.

Good to know

  • Trains run from early morning until a little after midnight; there is no overnight service. At night, ESHOT buses 200, 202, 204 and 206 serve the airport.
  • At morning and evening rush hour trains to and from the city can be crowded — awkward with large suitcases.
  • Daytime trains are frequent, so you rarely wait long on the platform.
  • For your return flight, the footbridge leads to the Domestic Terminal; for international departures, follow the signs to the International Terminal.
